What a summer storm actually does to a range

North Florida averages around 68 thunderstorm days a year. Almost none of the damage we see is a direct strike — it is the surge that arrives a moment behind one, and it lands on the lowest-voltage part of the appliance.
The call comes in the same shape every June. The range worked at dinner. There was weather overnight. In the morning the display is dark, or lit but unresponsive, and every knob turns without consequence.
It is almost never the strike
A direct strike on a house is rare, and it does not leave a tidy single-appliance failure behind. It leaves scorching, tripped everything, and usually a roofer’s phone number on the counter.
What we see instead is the surge: a fast rise in line voltage induced by a strike somewhere on the same distribution circuit, arriving through the wall outlet and finding the most delicate thing plugged into it. The event lasts microseconds. The consequence lasts until someone replaces a part.
Inside a modern range that most delicate thing is the low-voltage side of the control board — the logic that reads the oven sensor, watches the door switch and tells the relays when to close. It is not the elements, and it is not the igniters. A bake element is a heavy resistive coil that shrugs off a transient. Board traces measured in fractions of a millimetre do not.
This is why “the oven is dead, it must need a new element” is nearly always wrong, and why we would rather measure than agree with it.
Three things worth checking before you call
The breaker. A range usually sits on a dedicated double-pole breaker, and a surge can trip one half of it. A half-tripped breaker does not always look tripped from across the room. Push it firmly to off, then back to on, and see what changes.
What else went with it. If the microwave above the range is also dead, or the outlet beside it, the story is the circuit rather than the appliance, and an electrician should see the house before an appliance technician does. Telling us this on the phone saves you a visit.
The clock on everything else. If every clock in the house is flashing, the supply was interrupted. If only the range is affected, the surge found its way to that circuit specifically. Both are useful facts and neither costs anything to observe.
Why we test the supply before quoting a board
A control board is one of the more expensive parts in a cooking appliance, and it is the easiest part to sell twice. A failed board on a healthy supply is a straightforward parts job. A failed board on a supply with a loose neutral, a marginal connection at the terminal block or a standby generator that regulates poorly under sudden load will be a failed board again inside a month.
So the sequence is fixed: confirm voltage at the appliance, confirm it under load, look at the terminal block and the cord, and only then talk about the part. If the fault is in the house rather than the range, the honest answer is that you need an electrician and not us, and you will get that answer.
What actually prevents it
Whole-house surge protection at the panel is the measure that matters, and it is an electrician’s job rather than ours. A point-of-use protector is better than nothing for a plug-in appliance, but a hardwired range or built-in oven cannot use one, which is precisely the category that keeps failing.
If you are already replacing a board after a storm, that is the moment to ask an electrician what protecting the panel would cost. It is a smaller number than the second board.
When it does fail
