What changed is everything downstream of the blower — filters, duct, damper — and, in a tightly built house, whether any air is available to replace what the hood removes. A homeowner tells us the hood has lost its power. They add, almost as an aside, that it still works fine if the kitchen window is open. That aside is the entire diagnosis, and it is not a broken appliance. ## A hood cannot remove air the house cannot replace Extraction is not a one-way operation. Every cubic foot a blower pushes outside has to be replaced by a cubic foot coming in from somewhere. In a leaky old house that air arrives through a hundred gaps and nobody notices. In a tightly built modern house — which is most of what stands on Fleming Island — there are fewer gaps, and the house resists. When the house resists, the blower runs at full speed and moves a fraction of its rated air. Open a window and the resistance disappears, and the same blower suddenly performs. Nothing failed. The system was never given an inlet. In most Florida jurisdictions the residential mechanical code requires a makeup-air provision once kitchen exhaust exceeds 400 cubic feet per minute. The reason is more than paperwork: pull that much air out of a sealed house and it will come back down the path of least resistance, and in a house with fuel-burning appliances that path can be a flue. Your county building department is the authority on what applies at your address, and it is a conversation worth having during a remodel rather than after one. ## Before blaming the blower, look downstream Most "weak hood" calls are resistance, not motor. In rough order of frequency: **Filters.** Baffle filters loaded with grease cost airflow immediately and continuously. They are dishwasher-safe on most hoods and they are the cheapest performance improvement available to anyone. **The duct run.** Length, elbows, and especially an elbow placed immediately at the blower outlet all cost air. A duct that had to follow the framing rather than the shortest route is a fixed constraint on the appliance, and no replacement blower changes it. **The damper.** A backdraught damper stiff with hardened grease may only be opening halfway. On a windy day the same damper failing to close is why the kitchen smells of outside. **The termination.** Roof and wall caps have screens. Screens collect lint, pollen and, in this climate, wasp nests. ## What noise tells you A blower that has always been loud is a duct and design question. A blower that became loud is mechanical, and the character of the sound narrows it fast. A rumble that rises and falls with speed is imbalance — debris or grease loaded unevenly on one side of the wheel, or a wheel that has shifted on its shaft. A constant whine at one pitch is a bearing. A rattle that is worst on the lowest speed is often not the blower at all: it is a panel, a filter or a damper vibrating in an airstream no longer strong enough to hold it still. ## Downdrafts and remote blowers A downdraft works against the direction heat naturally travels, so every loss in the system hurts it more than it hurts an overhead hood. It also adds a lift mechanism — a motor, a drive and a limit switch — that can jam with grease. Remote and in-line blowers put the noise in the attic or on the roof, which is a good trade for daily life and a scheduling consideration for a repair. We establish where the blower physically lives before quoting, because the answer decides whether the visit needs a ladder. ## The honest version If the diagnostic shows a healthy blower on a duct that will never deliver its rated airflow, we will tell you that and not sell you a motor. Those two faults look identical from the kitchen and are told apart in an afternoon. Nobody notices an oven drifting. They notice that a recipe they have made for eleven years suddenly needs six more minutes, and they blame the recipe. By the time it gets described to us it has usually been going on for a season. There are four common causes, and you can separate three of them at home. ## First, measure something Buy an oven thermometer — the dial type that hangs from a rack is adequate — and put it in the centre of the middle rack. Set the oven to 350°F, let it preheat, and then leave it another twenty minutes. This part matters. An oven reports preheat complete when the sensor is satisfied, not when the walls and racks have caught up, and the mass of a built-in cavity takes a while. Read the thermometer at twenty minutes and again at forty. Write both down. **Steady and wrong** — the same 25°F low at both readings — is an offset. Most ovens have a user calibration adjustment for exactly this, and the owner's manual will tell you how far it can be moved. That is a five-minute job and no visit. **Wandering** — right at twenty minutes, twenty degrees off at forty, then back — is a sensor or a control fault. The cavity is cycling around a target it cannot hold. **Never arriving** — climbing slowly and stalling short — is a heating fault: an element, the relay that drives it, or on a gas oven the burner and its ignition. ## The sensor, and why we measure it twice An oven temperature sensor is a resistance probe. Its resistance rises with temperature along a curve the manufacturer publishes, which means it can be checked against a real number rather than a hunch. We measure it cold, compare it with the maker's own table, and then measure it again at temperature. This catches the failure mode that a single cold reading misses entirely: a sensor that reads perfectly at room temperature and wanders once it is hot is still a bad sensor, and it is the one that produces the "sometimes it is fine" complaint. The sensor is not usually an expensive part. Diagnosing it by replacement, however, is an expensive habit. ## The door is the other half of the story Half the drifting ovens we see are not drifting at all. They are leaking. Put a sheet of paper across the door seal and close the door on it. Pull. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is not sealing at that point. Repeat at several points across the top and both sides. A gasket that has flattened with age, or a door that has dropped on a hinge that lost spring tension, lets enough heat past the seal to pull the front of the cavity cold while the sensor at the back keeps reporting that everything is fine. This is why calibration does not fix it. You can offset the control all you like; you are correcting a number, not a leak. The repair is a gasket or a hinge, and both are mechanical parts with predictable lifetimes. ## Uneven browning is usually air, not heat If one side of the tray browns and the other stays pale, look at circulation before temperature. In a convection cavity the fan flattens the gradient between top and bottom. A fan slowed by a dry bearing, a blade that has loosened on its shaft, or a rear baffle refitted a few millimetres out of position after a clean will bake on a slope no matter how accurate the sensor is. Rotate a tray halfway through and see whether the result evens out. If it does, the fault is circulation. ## A word about self-clean Self-clean runs the cavity far above any cooking temperature for hours, and it is the condition that finds a marginal latch motor, a tired thermal cut-out or a door switch that was already intermittent. The pattern of which burners click, and which do not, narrows the fault to one of four things before any tool comes out. A gas burner that clicks and never catches is the most common call we take that is not weather-related. It is also the one that most often turns out to be something the owner could have settled in five minutes, so it is worth writing down properly. Before anything else: if you can smell gas and the burner is not lighting, stop. Turn the knob off, ventilate the room, and do not keep trying. Persistent clicking with the gas flowing is releasing unburnt fuel into the kitchen. ## Watch the other burners first On most spark-ignition cooktops and ranges, every electrode fires when any single knob is turned. That behaviour, which sounds like a fault to people who have never noticed it, is the most useful diagnostic on the appliance. **All burners click, one stays dark.** The spark module is working and the problem is at that burner. Look at three things in order: the cap, the electrode, and the ports. **Nothing clicks at all.** The module, its supply, or the switch stack behind the knobs. This is where the visit becomes ours rather than yours. **Clicking continues after the flame is established.** The ignition side is fine and the flame-sensing side is not confirming what is plainly burning. Usually a carboned electrode tip or a cracked ceramic. ## The three things to check at a dark burner **The cap.** A sealed burner cap has to sit flat and centred on its base. A millimetre proud, or rotated a few degrees off its locating features, and the flame will not carry around the ring or reach the electrode. Lift it, look at the seating surface, and set it down again deliberately. This is the single most common cause after a deep clean. **The ports.** The small holes around the burner ring have to be clear. Boil-over sugar, water still trapped from cleaning, and in outdoor appliances the occasional insect, all block them. A straightened paper clip clears a port. A drill bit or a pin will enlarge it permanently, which changes the flame for the worse and cannot be undone. **The electrode.** A ceramic insulator with a hairline crack leaks the spark to the nearest grounded metal, so the module fires and the burner never sees it. In low light you can see where the spark actually goes. That is a part, and it is not an expensive one. ## Let it dry Water is a genuine cause and a genuinely easy fix. After a clean, or after a pot has boiled dry across the cooktop, give the burner an hour with the cap off before deciding anything has failed. Outdoors, after a run of afternoon storms, give it longer. A great many grill and cooktop calls in this climate would have resolved themselves overnight. ## When the flame is the wrong colour A burner that lights but burns yellow, soft and slow is not an ignition problem. It is fuel and air. The usual causes are a partly blocked orifice, debris in the venturi, or an appliance running on a gas it was not set up for. Clay County has both natural-gas streets and propane tanks, and a conversion carried out without changing every orifice produces exactly this flame long before anything actually fails. On propane, a whole appliance that suddenly runs lazy on every burner is usually the regulator's excess-flow device, tripped by opening the tank valve quickly with a knob already on. Close everything, wait a minute, then open the tank slowly. ## When to call Call when nothing clicks, when the clicking will not stop after the flame is lit, when you can smell gas, or when you have done the cap, the ports and the drying time and the burner is still dark.
