Hibernia sits at the river end of Fleming Island, on lots held under old oak canopy with frontage on the St. Johns. It is the least uniform part of the peninsula — larger parcels, houses built to their own plans rather than a developer’s, and kitchens that have usually been remodelled at least once since the house was finished.

That variety is the reason a visit here starts with more questions than a visit to a master-planned street does.

The canopy is the local variable

Mature live oak over a lot is the reason to live here and the reason the power flickers. Limbs come down in summer weather, and the interruptions and surges that follow are what actually end control boards. Roughly 68 thunderstorm days a year across North Florida is the regional figure, and a heavily canopied street experiences more of the consequences than an open one.

The damage pattern is worth understanding, because it changes what should be replaced. A surge takes the low-voltage logic on a control board — the part that reads the oven sensor and drives the relays. It usually leaves the heavy components alone. An oven that has gone dark almost never needs a new element.

If the power has cycled repeatedly during a storm, check the range breaker before calling. Ranges sit on a double-pole breaker and a surge can trip one half of it in a way that does not look tripped from across the room.

Ask which gas the house actually runs on

On larger, older parcels away from the built-out streets, the gas supply is as likely to be a tank as a meter, and it is worth knowing which before a burner fault is diagnosed. Propane matters for cooking appliances in three specific ways.

First, an appliance set up for natural gas and moved to propane needs every orifice changed and the regulator confirmed. Half-conversions show themselves in the flame: yellow, soft, and slow to boil. Second, a propane regulator has an excess-flow device that trips if the tank valve is opened quickly with a burner knob already on, and the appliance then behaves as though every burner has failed at once. The recovery is to close everything, wait, and open the tank slowly. Third, propane is heavier than air, which is why the ventilation openings in an outdoor kitchen island are not decorative.

Older houses, retrofitted kitchens

Where a kitchen was remodelled into an existing house rather than designed around the appliance, the installation deserves inspection before parts are bought. The recurring findings are a cabinet opening widened without preserving side clearance, a gas run sized for what used to be there, and a hood duct that takes the route the framing allowed rather than the shortest one.

A long horizontal duct leg with a couple of tight elbows will halve the airflow of a perfectly healthy blower. Replacing the blower changes the noise and not the result, and we would rather tell you that at the diagnostic than after the invoice.

Access and time

Hibernia is at the southern end of the peninsula, further down US 17 than the rest of the route, often behind a long unlit drive. We allow a wider window for calls here, and we ask about gate arrangements, dogs and driveway access when the appointment is made rather than on arrival.

What we will not take on

An independent shop that says yes to everything is not being helpful. There are faults on this equipment that belong with the manufacturer, and on a long drive it is cheaper for everyone if that is settled on the phone rather than in your kitchen.

If the appliance is still inside its manufacturer warranty, the warranty repair is theirs to do and our invoice would simply be your money spent twice. If a fault can only be read with a diagnostic tool the manufacturer does not release, we will say so and tell you who to call. Sealed high-voltage assemblies inside a speed oven are handled as assemblies, not opened and rebuilt. And anything that turns out to be the house rather than the appliance — an undersized gas run, a shared circuit, a duct that was never going to move the air — is written down as what it is and handed to the trade that should fix it.
